Avid watchers of Disney movies and TV shows, prepare to be disappointed: Disney is going to end its partnership with Netflix in 2019, meaning that all Disney movies and shows will be removed from Netflix when the partnership ends.

Disney’s deal with Netflix states that the streaming service is allowed to stream old Disney movies as well as recently released films like Cars 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2.  This deal will extend to movies that have yet to be released, such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Black Panther, and The Incredibles 2.  Marvel-based Netflix originals like Daredevil and Jessica Jones will stay, but fan favorites like Moana, The Avengers and Star Wars: Rogue One could eventually be pulled.

Disney will create its own streaming services, an ESPN-based service in 2018 and a Disney service in 2019.  According to CNN, ESPN makes up the majority of Disney’s earnings, but as consumers change the way they watch their favorite shows, ESPN has gradually been raking in less money for the mass media conglomerate.

However, this jump to sports streaming seems like a risky move, according to Brian Weiser of the Pivotal Research Group, who believes that “Disney will have to be careful that it doesn’t transfer too much sports programming from its TV channels to the app.” Weiser claims that this imbalance of content could “upset cable companies and weigh on the price they pay Disney for ESPN.”

Disney has also planned to “acquire a majority stake” in major streaming service BAMTech, states CNN.  According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the company isn’t sure whether they will choose to include Marvel and Lucasfilm movies on the new Disney streaming service, but he says it’s “all in discussion.”  Iger states that this decision is “a big strategic shift for the company.  We felt that having control of a platform we’ve been very impressed with after buying 33 percent of it a year ago would give us control of our destiny.”

The new Disney service will be the only place where U.S. viewers will be able to watch Disney material, including future films like Toy Story 4 and Frozen 2, as well as shows from Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD.  The ESPN service will stream around 10,000 different sports events, including live streams of regional, national, and international events.  Disney already has a streaming service called DisneyLife, which lets families of up to 6 people stream Disney movies, shows, and songs to their mobile devices.
