Prom season is upon us with the girls dashing for dresses and expecting the guys to ask them with the grandest of gestures. The “Promposal” is a relatively new tradition that only emerged in the early 2000s. It evolved from flower petals leading from their dates’ houses to the schools and announcing their affections over megaphones to the modern day promposal, which is expected to be witty and sweet.

Although they were present in the early 2000s, promposals were only popularized when teens began using social media, originally during the days of youtube and facebook, but now, promposals live on, perpetuated by instagram, facebook, twitter, snapchat, and other forms of social media.

Modern promposals can range from a pun written in block letters on a poster to even crazier events involving animals or food. Central senior, Cole Muzio, hopped in a bathtub filled with cool whip to ask his girlfriend  with a poster that read, “It’d be COOL if you would WHIP it with me to prom”.

Central junior, John Neville, promposed to his girlfriend, Macey Crowder, by gifting her a baby chick and holding a poster that read, “Macey, you’re the ‘chick’ for me…Prom??”

Prom is an exciting time for juniors and seniors. It is a high school milestone that many students look forward to.

“I’m so excited for prom, and I’m excited to get all dressed up and dance with my friends,” Isabel Martinez stated.

Promposals only add to this excitement. Many girls wait in anticipation for what crazy gesture their dates will come up with.

“I was super surprised by it [her date’s promposal] so that made me even more excited to go to prom,” Maggie Carpenter stated.

Promposals are an epidemic across the United States and even draw criticism from other nations. High schoolers all over the world have mocked American teenagers on social media which has further established the promposals as a unique icon of this country. It has become a tradition and in the past decade, promposals have been fully integrated into the culture of the American youth.
