Is Star Wars doomed? As we all know, the iconic actress Carrie Fisher recently suffered an untimely death, which could lead to an uneasy future for the film series.”We’ve already learned that Carrie Fisher completed her filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII before she passed away,” says Ethan Anderton, writer for SlashFilms. News outlets have assured the public that Carrie Fisher’s role in the next Star Wars film has been completed, but not many people know she has an even larger role in Episode IX.

In the most recent Star Wars episode, “The Force Awakens,” Carrie Fisher’s character, Princess Leia, is the sister of the lost Luke Skywalker, mother of the infamous Kylo Ren, and recent widow of the dead Han Solo. Her character is vital to the drama and dynamic present in the family. Allegedly, she is supposed to reunite with Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker at some point in the series, but she can’t just show up in Episode VIII and then disappear.

Many people, such as Chris Hardwick, think the franchise should actually honor her in some way. “I think they should address it. I definitely think they should address it. I don’t think it should just be, ‘Oh, she’s not here anymore!’ I definitely think they should honor her,” Hardwick said. It is still up to debate if they are going to use digital technology to animate Leia like they did in Rogue One, or if they should write her off somehow. Nevertheless, it’s a safe bet that princess Leia is going to die in Episode VIII or IX, and perhaps it will be the Star Wars themed funeral fans always dreamed of.

So, now that we know Leia can no longer be a vital character in Episode IX, what does this mean for the future of Star Wars? Well, nobody knows. Not even the director, Colin Trevorrow, knows what’s to happen.Colin hasn’t spoken out much about what he’s going to do, but an insider expressed the problems being dropped on his shoulders. “People are still deeply mourning Carrie’s death over there,” he said. I don’t mean to sound like a nerd or anything, but not only was Leia potentially vital to the rebellion, but she was the only hope for Kylo Ren to stray from the dark side of the force. In other words, she was a very important character.

There was so much tension among her, Luke, Kylo, and Rey and now that tension is going to churn at the insides of the fans and not be properly resolved, right? Well, we must have faith in the future of the franchise and trust that Trevorrow will be  brilliant enough to save it. The future of the galaxy is in your hands, Trevorrow, let the force guide you…
